Olympus Mons

Olympus Mons

Olympus Mons is the highest known mountain in our solar system. It is a huge shield volcano located in the western hemisphere of Mars and covers an area the size of Arizona!

On the outer edges of the volcano are high cliffs up to five miles tall! Olympus Mons is 69,459 feet (21,170 m.) tall, about 2.5 times higher than Everest!

Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910) first gave the feature the name "Nix Olympica" which means "olympic snow," for its high albedo (reflectivity). Later astronomers adopted the current name Olympus Mons.
